Sometimes I just don't know how one makes it through the day I really don't. Rotten luck in the Metro and I know it shouldn't come as a surprise. Naturally I happened to get stuck behind a delightful but otherwise clueless Korean family at the kiosks. They were yammering amongst themselves, unsure of how the contraption worked. I was absolutely drowning in bags and had to go through the big station thank you very much and could not go around. A turnstile could have easily defeated me.
I couldn't wait for them to resolve the issue on their own so I assured them that the kiosk wouldn't do anything unchristian like steal their soul or the souls of any of their numerous status conscious social climbing ancestors, however, if I missed my news program there was no telling what I might do. They seemed satisfied when I shuffled through and didn't dematerialize, but still they hesitated. Remarkable culture.
Finally arrived at work, settled myself for the mind numbing drudgery, tuned into BBC, and what's this? Oh goodie! There's a conversation going on. A deafeningly loud conversation as to the respective merits of ColdPlay and SlipKnot. Both parties agree there is nothing technically "wrong" with SlipKnot and that ColdPlay is just a little "too precious for their own good." I found that I was checking my pulse the moment Office Jesus said "Coldplay are alright, but they are trying to be like Radiohead with absolutely no -SNORT- SNORT- SNORT- artistic credibility." Confirmed that I haven't slipped into a coma and turn the volume up on the old iPod. The best I can do is try to educate myself about places I'll never visit.
But I can't spend my day draped in the luxuriant sounds of British news anchors as much as I'd like to no. I have to do things. Make shit happen. Get my hussle on. I wander amongst the coworkers taking in their cow like grunts and disjointed mutterings. In the process I'm sucked into a conversation with a member of our brain trust who is just beside himself with smug condescension. He can't believe how many people have been waiting for days at LA Live for the premier of
Breaking Dawn. I stop the episode and ask him what movie it was. He explains to me in mock frustration (although I notice this evidence that I could be far more detached and esoteric than himself causes real distress) that some people have wasted 4 days camping in line and that they should "get a life".
I wanted to remind him that I have noticed that it often takes him longer than 4 days to do the New York Times crossword, and that seems like a tarsome waste of time. I failed to mention that it was a fact which he might want to go to greater lengths to conceal because people like myself do notice, and we make judgments, but these things never really come to one when it's actually handy and biting. Shoot.
Dialed into a "meeting" with people I thought would be tolerable and who ended up being the furthest thing from. Finally made it to 1:30 and I bailed. Someone commented on my glowing smile and I confessed I'd decided to spice up Monday by making it Taco Night. What else can you do?
